The website is used for initial setup and configuration of the surveys, maps, etc. Use the app for on-site data collection and sync the results. Use the website again to check\/amend the data, and prepare reports and maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not on iPhone\/iPad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At present, our mobile survey apps <strong>do not run on iPhones or iPads<\/strong>. But many OTISS customers use their<strong> iPhone <\/strong>together with an<strong> Android tablet <\/strong>for on-site surveys &#8211; <em>see below for more details.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3621\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.otiss.co.uk\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/tablet-phone-and-browser.png?resize=100%2C100&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\"><\/figure>&nbsp; Which Android?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"myTable\">\n<div class=\"myRow\" style=\"background-color: #dddddd;\">\n<div class=\"myCell myCol-3\">\n<h1>Phone<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"myCell myCol-9\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<ul>\n<li>For small surveys and ad-hoc inspections, your phone has all you need &#8211; 4G\/3G, WiFi, camera and GPS.<\/li>\n<li>Many phones now have quite big screens.<\/li>\n<li>Use the in-built GPS, or use with a more accurate Bluetooth GPS receiver (see below).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"myRow\">\n<div class=\"myCell myCol-3\">\n<h1>Tablet<\/h1>\n<p>with 3G\/4G\/SIM or<br>along with your phone or iPhone<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"myCell myCol-9\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<ul>\n<li>For larger surveys, a tablet with a larger screen is often more convenient. I think the 8\u201d tablets fit in my hand more conveniently. But when fitted with a cover and hand strap, the larger tablets are also very comfortable.<\/li>\n<li>Interestingly, the larger screen seems to encourage you to add more notes during the survey.<\/li>\n<li>Use the in-built GPS, or use with a more accurate Bluetooth GPS receiver (see below).<\/li>\n<li>Some tablets have 3G\/4G\/SIM as well as Wifi, and can connect to the internet where-ever you are (just like your phone).<\/li>\n<li><strong>NB: <\/strong>But most tablets have no 3G\/4G\/SIM &#8211; these are &#8216;Wifi-only&#8217;. When on site, it is recommended that Wifi-only tablets be connected to the internet via a Wifi hotspot on your phone or iPhone (see below &#8211; its very easy to set up!).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"myRow\" style=\"background-color: #dddddd;\">\n<div class=\"myCell myCol-3\">\n<h1>Rugged<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"myCell myCol-9\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Rugged Android phones\/tablets designed for outdoor GIS data collecting.<\/li>\n<li>These usually have 4G\/3G, WiFi, camera and a very accurate GPS\/GNSS.<\/li>\n<li>They are also waterproof, shockproof, brighter screens, better battery life, etc.<\/li>\n<li>More expensive &#8211; but ideal for use with OTISS (see below).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In all cases, I would suggest going for mid-range or good quality models. We know our customers are using a range of models from Samsung, Motorola, Google, Sony, Trimble, MobileMapper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important Features<figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3681\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.otiss.co.uk\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Photos-4-markup.png?resize=200%2C310&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"310\"><\/figure><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The OTISS survey apps run on phones\/tablets with Android release 5.x, 6.0.1, 7.x&nbsp;and above. <em>Note we have found some 6.0 devices that have an Android bug which prevents OTISS from working properly.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our apps do not require an extremely powerful processor but make sure the device has at least 2GB RAM.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At least 16Gbytes of storage is recommended for keeping the survey data and photos.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the phone\/tablet has GPS &#8211; a few very cheap tablets don&#8217;t have an internal GPS (e.g. Amazon Fire, Google Pixel Tablet).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Good photos may reduce the need to provide detailed descriptions, and so speed up the survey process. But you don&#8217;t need a very high resolution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check that the brightness can be turned up to make the display readable in sunlight.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>OTISS apps <strong><em>must have a data connection to the Internet<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; either a direct 3G\/4G or via Wifi &#8211; see below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Also consider:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An in-car charger is recommended&nbsp;so you can recharge it when&nbsp;driving to\/from sites and while you are having a break.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are doing a lot of surveying, then an extra battery or USB power pack is a useful accessory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most Android devices are small enough to fit inside the wet weather folders\/covers that you normally use for surveying. Alternatively, there are several companies selling rugged and waterproof cases for the most popular phones and tablets &#8211; for example, do a web search for &#8216;Otter case for&#8217; and\/or &#8216;Griffin case for&#8217;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"myTable\">\n<div class=\"myTableCell\"><figure><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2644 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.otiss.co.uk\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/techRadar-1.png?resize=431%2C61&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"431\" height=\"61\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.otiss.co.uk\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/techRadar-1.png?w=431&amp;ssl=1 431w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.otiss.co.uk\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/techRadar-1.png?resize=300%2C42&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 431px) 100vw, 431px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n<div class=\"myTableCell\"><em>If you are looking to buy a tablet, there are lots to choose from &#8211; and more and more being produced by different manufacturers. For example, see this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/mobile-computing\/tablets\/15-best-android-tablets-in-the-world-905504\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">review of latest top tablets<\/a>.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gps\">Using external Bluetooth GPS &#8211; with sub-metre accuracy<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.otiss.co.uk\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/geode00147-3.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.otiss.co.uk\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/geode00147-3.jpg?resize=300%2C242&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5070\" style=\"width:319px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.otiss.co.uk\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/geode00147-3.jpg?resize=300%2C242&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.otiss.co.uk\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/geode00147-3.jpg?w=598&amp;ssl=1 598w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Good quality phones\/tablets can typically achieve 3-5 metre accuracy in the right conditions \u2013 but not always!&nbsp; In many of cases, the phone\/tablet&#8217;s GPS is accurate enough <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">when combined with<\/span> online maps and your own site plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But for greater accuracy<\/strong>, special purpose GPS devices are designed for much greater precision &#8211; from 2.5 metres to 5 centimetre accuracy. It is now very easy to link a very accurate external Bluetooth GPS device to your phone\/tablet and benefit from the improved accuracy. Once the external GPS is configured to your phone, the OTISS survey apps (and all the other apps on your phone) simply use the \u2018better\u2019 position data provided from the external GPS rather than from the internal GPS. The OTISS survey apps show a red cross indicates the reported GPS position, and a red circle gives a rough idea of the \u2018accuracy\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An added benefit is that it will also greatly extend the phone\/tablet&#8217;s battery life (up to 40% longer). They are waterproof (IP67), rugged construction, bright display screens and bigger batteries. If you are going to invest, then make the device includes; built-in 4G\/SIM, very accurate GPS\/GNSS location and a camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peartechnology.co.uk\/products\/hardware\/\">Trimble TDC<\/a>6<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peartechnology.co.uk\/products\/hardware\/\">Archer 4<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We found a good review article &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.androidcentral.com\/best-rugged-android-tablet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Best Android Rugged Tablets For Outdoor Use<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wifi-only Android Tablets&nbsp; &#8211; with WiFi Hotspot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The OTISS survey apps must have<strong> a data connection to the Internet<\/strong>. This is not a problem for smart phones or tablets with 3G\/4G. But most tablets only have Wifi, so they need help to get a connection to the internet when you are on-site or away from the office\/home.
