OTISS works with all Android devices with the Android release 2.1 and above.
If you already have an Android phone or tablet, then you can start to use the OTISS system straight away.
- Goto the Android Market and search for “tree survey”.
- Select and install the Tree Survey app from Intrinsica.
- Enter your login details if you already have an OTISS account,
or use the app to Sign Up. - Press CheckOnline and download the Example surveys.
- Start surveying…
Looking to buy
If you are looking to buy a phone or tablet, there are lots to choose from – and more and more of these being produced by different manufactures. For example, see http://www.techradar.com/news/mobile-computing/tablets/14-best-android-tablets-in-the-world-905504
Here are some things to consider.
- Our app does not require an extremely powerful processor or gigabytes of memory. But if you plan to use the phone for multiple purposes, I would suggest going for mid-range or high-end models.
- Make sure the phone’s display is large enough for your eyesight, and the brightness can be turned up.
- OTISS used online maps - so you must have 3G and a data contract.
- An in-car charger is probably required so you can recharge it when out and about.
- If you are doing a lot of surveying, then an extra battery or power pack is recommended. These can be recharging in the car while you are on-site.
- Regarding tablets; I think the 7” tablets fit in my hand more conveniently than the 10″ models – but you might like the larger screens. We know people are using the Samsung and HTC tablets.
- Make sure that whatever you buy is small enough to fit inside the wet weather folders/covers that you normally use for surveying.
OTISS does not sell phones, tablets or phone contracts – you can get them at the usual phone and electronic retail places.
