Surveying with Android

OTISS is a new approach to Tree Survey and Estate Management systems. It is built around the use of smart phones and tablets (with GPS, 3G, WiFi, cameras, etc), which sync their maps and inspection data to/from our secure website.

  • Our survey app displays maps with icons for trees and site furniture. Users simply tap on the icon and update the inspection data.
  • The OTISS website then collates the maps and survey data, providing consolidated reports and work schedules;
    • enabling you to maintain site furniture that is fit for purpose and safe to use, and
    • also providing a ‘duty of care’ audit trail of the tree safety inspections.
  • In the majority of cases, the phone/tablet’s GPS is accurate enough when combined with the online maps.
  • For small surveys and ad-hoc inspections, your phone has all you need.
  • For larger surveys, a tablet or phone with a larger screen is often more convenient.
    • A number of manufacturers are now annoucing rugged android tablets for harsher conditions (e.g. Trimble, Panisonic, Motorola, etc).
    • An in-car charger is probably required so you can recharge it when out and about.
    • An extra battery pack or external power pack is recommended. These can be charging in the car while you are out surveying.
  • Most Android devices are small enough to fit inside the wet weather folders/covers that you normally use for surveying.
